Recent past events have shown us the importance of communication and understanding — these are the ingredients for making Maine a stronger and more cohesive community.
Today, there are many who do not have real access to news and information that impacts their families and their communities simply because of language barriers. AND there are important stories about people and communities in Maine that simply aren't heard. Maine Public's Connecting Communities Fundraiser is about securing the necessary funding to address these issues and build a stronger Maine.
We are raising the funds to pilot two new initiatives that will connect Maine communities in new and valuable ways.
Maine Public News Connect
Maine Public News Connect< will make the news available in multiple languages — French, Spanish, Somali, and Portuguese — so more Mainers can have access to trusted, reliable information. New Mainers across Maine have different levels of access to reliable information about what is taking place in the immediate world around them, whether they be pressing public health issues, school closures, or any variety of important news. This has never been more apparent than during the COVID-19 crisis. Maine Public News Connect looks to address this disparity.
Report for America
Maine Public's partnership with Report for America will enable us to hire a full-time reporter to share the stories of Maine's immigrant communities. These are valuable and rich stories that should be heard and will accelerate understanding and build a stronger Maine Community. Report for America will go a long way to ensure that more voices will be heard and more stories are told.
Each of these initiatives will require real resources to make them a reality. Help us by better connecting our communities. Support these projects now:
